Crying Babies, Reflux and Homeopathy

Crying Babies, Reflux and Homeopathy

All babies cry but some babies cry ALL the time or for prolonged periods, and nothing seems to comfort them. Read on, because in this article we will be exploring some of the causes for this crying and looking specificaly at the issue of reflux and what Homeoapthy can do to help.

Firstly,  I want to acknowledge those parents reading this who are going through this experience. It is not quite what you imagined when you gave birth to your baby is it? Your desire to help your child, coupled with the emotional and physical exhaustion of coping with relentless crying when you feel powerless to stop it, can really take its toll. One of my babies cried like this and for 4 months the only thing that would sometimes help was very fast forward motion in a pram. Consequentially, I walked very fast for miles and miles every day which was physically exhausting in itself. If I had had the homeopathic know-howI have now back then, I would am sure my child would not have had to cry like that! So personally it is very important to me that I can pass this information on to you.

Please share this with other parents who may behaving a crying baby experience!

Causes of Crying

If you have a baby who cries alot it is important that you make sure that very serious issues have been ruled out by having your baby examined by a doctor. Once you have done this you can move on to identify what is actually wrong with your baby. There are 3 common areas to consider:

  1. Relux
  2. Colic
  3. Structural issues

This first article will look at reflux as a cause of crying and provide homeopathic, naturopathic and self-help solutions for you and your baby.

What is Reflux?

Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux/Disease or GOR/GORD is the spontaneous passage of part or all of the stomach contents (comprising food and stomach acid) into the oesophagus. There may be symptoms such as regurgitation, posseting and projectile vomiting. Sometimesthe vomit does not emerge from their mouths, and the child may not vomit at all. This is termed “silent reflux”.

When this condition causes additional complications such as failure to thrive or oesophagitis, the condition is then referred to as GORD (gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease). Read this fora list of reflux symptoms and for an excellent additional resource.

Self-help for parents

Firstly, if you have an infant with reflux you are probably exhausted. The tissue salts Kali Phos 3X will be ideal for you to take as a parent 3 times a day to help support your energy levels. Secondly eating properly is incredibly important. Not just if you are breastfeeding but to support your body while you weather this storm. Try to make nutritious high protein choices rather than sugary carbohydrate ones. If you like it, eat some red meat to increase your B vitamin intake as these vitamins support your nervous system in times of stress. Thirdly time-out from the routine is incredibly important. Arrange a regular slot where a relative or friend can look after your baby for a couple of hours. It is the regularity of this break that is imortant because you can plan around it and look forward to it.

Help For Your Crying Baby

Lactose Intolerance

If your baby has been diagnosed with either rflux or colic and all more serious causes have been eliminated, it is essential to consider lactose intolerance first as a causation as it is very common. If you are breastfeeding remove all dairy products from your diet for 3 weeks and see if your baby inproves. If you are bottle feeding place your baby on a lactose-free formula for 3 weeks. It is important if you are breastfeeding that you try and continue; as this is one of the best ways to protect and heal your baby’s digestive issues as long as you are eating suitable foods for your baby.

Gut Health Give your baby an infant probiotic. 80% of the immune system comes from the gut so ensuring there is balance in the gut is doing your baby a great favour! If your baby has had antibiotics and/or you have while pregnant or breastfeeding ,this step is even more important. If you want to understand more about the importance of the gut and how to look after it, find out more in “Is Your Gut Your Problem” and the follow on article “Your Homeopathic Gut Toolkit“.

Homeopathic Treatment for Reflux

Natrum Phos 3X tissue salt helps neutralise acids and aids digestion. Give this 3 times a day to your baby for 4-6 weeks and if results are encouraging, continue until all symptoms are resolved.

Magnesium Phos 3X is another tissue salt that helps with cramps, spasm and pain. It works best when administered in warm water and can be given at the same time as the Natrum Phos 3X

Aethusia 30:This is the ideal homeopathic medicine for those babies who cannot tolerate breastmilk and have vomiting, regurgitation and/or silent reflux. Give this medicine twice a day until symptoms improve.

Phosphorus 30: Give this medicine when vomiting begins as soon as the milk has a chance to warm up in the stomach. Strangely the baby is better fro colder drinks or food.

Lycopodium 30: Use this medicine if your baby is worse between 4-8pm and sometimes also at 2AM. Flatulence and gurgling tummy with bloating may also be present. Your baby will be better lying on the right side.

Silicea 30: For babies who reject the breast and who vomit up breastmilk as curds after feeding and are hungry after. They cannot digest it. Give Silicea to the breastfeedingMOTHER (rather than the baby) twice day.

Kali Carb 30: Symptoms worse between 2-4am and after eating. Chronic painwhich is better for motion, hot drinks and bending forward.

Bryonia 30: Acute attacks of pain worse for the slightest motion accompagnied by great thirst. Baby will draw legs up and burp. The tongue may be coated dirty white or brown in centre.

How to prescribe If your baby has reflux or GOR/GORD give the Natrum Phos and Magnesium Phos tissue salts as a matter of course. Then exmaine the descriptions of the homeopathic medicines above and choose the medicine that fits your baby’s symptoms closely. Use that medicine in addition to the tissue salts for 2-3 days and if you observe an improvement continue. If there is no imrpovement select the next closest medicine and try again.

The most helpful piece of advice anyone ever gave me as a new mother came from my own mother. She said that when times are difficult and it seems like there is no way out and nothing makes a difference, remember that EVERTHING is transient and this, like everything else will pass.

I hope you too find this helpful:)

Happy Homeopathic prescribing!

  1. Where can I purchase Natrum Phos 3X, and in what form and dosage do you recommend?

    • Noelle,
You can purchase Natrum Phos 3x in Australia from most health food stores and some chemists and pharmacies that sell homeopathic medicines. It’s technically a tissue salt and is very low potency which is good for babies. Unfortunately without knowing your case I cannot recommend a dosage but the format is usually in small pills that dissolve in water and so you can deliver the dose to a small baby via cooled boiled water n the tip of a clean teaspoon. Hope this helps!

  2. Hi
I’m thinking about giving my breastfed 4 month old nat phos. She has struggled with digestive issues since a few weeks old- crying for hours a night. I thought it was colic at first as she is a very windy baby but i feel the wind has improved & she is still v unsettled. In particular she struggles to sleep during the day, straining, hiccups, wriggling. If she falls asleep on me she wakes on being placed in her cot & wriggles then cries. Gaviscon gave her horrendous constipation but the doctors won’t prescribe me anything else other than a lactose free formula to give last thing at night.
Does this sound typical of reflux? It must be silent reflux as she is rarely sick although I hear sounds that make me think she has brought milk up when there us nothing there.
    Thanks in advance!

  3. Hi, i have a 21month old who is suffering from reflux. He vomits almost everyday and still cannot tolerate lumpy food. We feed him small and regular meals. The Dr. says he’ll grow out of it but I am very concerned. Is it ok to start him on nat phos 6x and how much should I give. Many thanks for your help.

  4. What dosage of the homeopathic do we administer? For example Once daily?

  5. Hi My baby is 5 week old.he has gas problem and vomiting.and all the time wet burp.he is always restless when he is wake.and he has loose poop all day in small amount. .like when he pas gas.
And in Canada can I get nat phos 3 without prescription of doctor??.

  6. My baby had acid reflux and nothing was helpful to treat this problem unless I started babies magic tea. This organic tea is great and soothes tummy problems of babies quickly.

  7. My 4 month old has been diagnosed with silent reflux and has been prescribed omeprazole 10mg as his first dose for the morning and polypep at night. He is constipated and sleep deprived… kindly advise.

    • Dear Muniba,
I’m sorry to hear your son has reflux. Homeopathy can help but you will need a full consultation with me as ev ert case is different and I am unable to give anythiung but the most general advice such as that in my blog posts. My skype consults can be booked here:

  9. Hi my baby has silent reflux and he can’t deal with the pain so he has developed Sandpiper syndrome I am a breastfeeding mother please let me know what I can give my poor baby as he arches his back stiffens his body cries from morning till night has constant hiccups, crystal when he burps and he will not be cuddled he is also refusing the breastfeeding please help me I am so worried.

  10. Sorry it’s called Sandifer syndrome I am aware it is course by pain so the baby arches his back and stiffens his body

  11. I’ve been giving my 3 month old nat phos and mag phos together but one of them is causing her increased pain in terms of gas – she is more uncomfortable and wriggly. Which remedy do you think it would be? My baby had a tongue and lip tie which means that she swallows lots of air and is in pain with gas. I think that the swallowed air also causes a bit of reflux – I often hear her swallowing.

    • Hi Joanne, thanks you for youtr question. It’s VERY unlikely that either of the tissue salts are causing the extra wriggling and the timing may be cocinidental but to make sure please stop them both and see if it continues. If not, start one of the medicines and observe for a few days and then if still no wriggling then start the other and see. I would pay particular attention to your diet also to see if anything exacerabes your baby.

  12. You recommend phos nat 3x three times a day, I was told to use Phos Nat 6x after each feeding not exceeding 6 doses. My health store only had 30x. Given I have 30x what is the dosage you recommend, 1 tablet 3 times a day?

    • Katie, Nat Phos 30 C is a conpletely differnet medicine and without taking your specific case I am unable to determine if this would be appropreiate for your baby. Nat Phos 3x or 6 x is a Tissue salt and behaves differntly in the body. Try ordering it online perhaps.

  13. Thanks for this great info on homeopathic options! Just wanted to point out that a mother produces lactose in her breastmilk regardless of whether she consumes dairy. La Leche League International or KellyMom would have more info on that if needed. When a mother eliminates dairy, she’s removing the possibly offending proteins in milk that can get through to her breastmilk. Which means taking other allergens out could help too, especially when some moms say that taking dairy out didn’t help but they didn’t eliminate other allergens.

    • Hi Jazmine, thanks for this info. I agree it’s very important to work with other dietary allergens and I usually take a comprehensive history as well as getting mum’s to keep a fod diary to see if we can pick the offending allergens or intolerances.

  14. Hi Sam
Just found your site and your article on reflux, brilliant reading, I have found it really helpful.
I have a 5 month old with silent reflux and the tissue salts you recommend have arrived, looking at your descriptions I think the closest match is Lycopodium to go with it. How often/when do you give the Lycopodium and how often/when the tissue salts.
    Thank you

    • The lycopodium 30 twice daily morning and night and the tissue salts 4 x day.

  15. I am just unsure how much of each thing to give. The medicine packaging says 5 pellets 3x a day I’m assuming this is not the baby dose recommendation. You say 3x a day, but not how many pellets for each time. Another site says nat phos 6x 1/2 tablet after each feedingredients up to 6 whole tablets. Do I give the extra symptom based meds 3x a day or one pellet after each feed or 5 pellets 3x a day like the directions say? I feel like there should be more direction if you are going to post med suggestions. Thank you for the information. I am tired of dealing with “know everything” symptom drug pushing Dr’s. I actually want to stop the problem not hide it.

    • Hi Jamie,
I understand your frustration. The trouble is that advice can only be quite general as homeopathic medicines you can buy might be created differently. If you email me directly via my website and explain your problem I will try and assist you.
