Treating Influenza with Homeopathy

With shortening days and the outside temperature dropping, we tend to become less active as winter approaches. This means that we can become more susceptible to catching the flu. Sam Adkins, The Homeopathic Coach outlines which homeopathic medicines you can take to recover fast and naturally.

Proper influenza is the type of viral illness that is not just a bad cold. You actually feel that you have no choice but to stay in bed.

Typical symptoms

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Sweats
  • Aching body
  • Mucous congestion
  • Coughs
  • Painful chest

So which Homeopathic medicines do you take?

Outlined below are 5 common Homeopathic medicines and the symptoms to look for when selecting your medicine. Do not worry if not all the symptoms listed under the medicine are present as long as the main symptoms of the patient are well represented in the description.
I have not included common symptoms such as nasal congestion as it is almost always present with flu.

Belladonna 30

Symptoms come on very suddenly and there is a high fever with flushed face, staring eyes and sometimes incoherent behavior.

Oscillococcinum 200

This Homeopathic medicine is used all over the world as a preventative. Take it when close family members have the flu, or you have been at close quarters with someone with the flu. You can also give it when there are general flu symptoms that don't fit into either of the other homeopathic medicines descriptions.

Gelsemium 30

This flu state is characterized by great weaknessand overall fatigue. There is often trembling from exertion and the patient may have chills up and down the spine. Droopy eyelids and dark circles.

Rhus Tox 30

Restlessness and aching muscles on initial movement which eases with further movement.

Eupatorium Perfolatum 30

Intense and deep seated aching in the bones, (especially in the back, wrists and ankles). Eyeballs may feel sore when turned. Patient is restless and chilly with a bursting headache.

Bryonia 30

Patient feels dried out, hot and thirsty and irritable with a cough that hurts the head. They are difficult to please.

How much medicine do I give?

If you are using the Oscillococcinum as a preventative, take it twice a day for up to 3 days.
With all other homeopathic medicines outlined above, give a single dose every 2 hours until relief is obtained. Repeat the medicine when the same symptoms appear to return. If there is no improvement after 3 doses, try another homeopathic medicine.

It is likely that with an influenza lasting several days, you will need different homeopathic medicines at different times as the patient's illness progresses.

As with all illness, a strong immune system is very important so eating a broad diet big on fresh produce and green leafy vegetables and a diet that is zinc rich, will help you to minimize your susceptibility to Winter infections.

For those of you hearing about the fear of a pandemic of Swine flu you can take Oscillococinum 200 as a prophylactic daily for 7 days if you have been exposed to flu or weekly during winter if you are susceptible.

I am not at all sure we should be getting all worried, all those warnings re: bird flu and it never surfaced here. However, from what I have heard, Gels may be one of the best to treat it as the muscle aches are apparently severe.

Great prevention is something simple like Allium as every cold or flu begins with a runny nose or coryzia, by stemming the tide at the first presenting symptom sometimes we prevent the whole thing.

I completely agree Annie. Apparently Influenzum 9C weekly for 4 weeks is also a well researched preventative. As is great diet and a positive attitude. iIwould only be concerned if i was travelling to somewhere like Mexico currently. Then I would definietly take a prohylactice dose of the above along with taking a influenza treatment kit.

Great article as usual Sam. You offer so much great advice through your blog and website. I always love to share your useful information. Here in Sedona, Arizona, I have seen very little of the Swine Flu. If we keep our attitude positive and trust our bodies and keep our immune systems strong we can weather any symptoms that may appear. Seems that we are always being feed a lot of fear through the media and news and one wonders where the fear originates. Possibly from the ones who stand to profit from the fear.

Thanks again for giving us the information to feed our immune system rather than cripple it with needless and ineffective medication.

Annie,
I love how you put your comment! I agree with all that you say and agree also that it is highly likley the media fear is lsupplied and boosted by leaks of information from the main pharmaceutical companies who are likely to profit from the fear. None of the supposed pandemics in recent years have materialised and meanwhile alot of vaccines have been sold to governments who are doing the best they can with the information they have to protect their public.
It's just great to spread the word about ways to stay healthy and support the immune system like you said.
Thanks for dropping by Annie! Great to see you leave your wisdom here!

I've heard that wearing masks can offer double protection.. Not only can they protect you from catching the flu from someone else, but also (if you are infected) can prevent you from passing it to someone else.

What's your take on this?

August 28, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterN95 Respirator

HI N95 Respirator
My take on masks is that many of the ones offered as protection let small airborne watre droplets through so you can catch swine flu anyway. If you actually have flu of any type it is considerate to stay home and keep your germs to yourself. The best thing to prevent catching it is to take some of the immune system boosting methods i suggest and this includes excellent nutrition.
Fear also is an amazing way to attract what you are avoiding so a positive mindset IN ADDITION is a good idea!
