Homeopathy Alternatives to Antibiotics

When is it appropriate to use an alternative to antibiotics? Sam Adkins, the Homeopathic Coach looks at 4 common ailments and when homeopathy is more effective. Key Facts: Antibiotics cannot kill viruses The common cold and influenza are caused by a virus The negative effects of antibiotics outweigh the benefits in the case of mild upper respiratory infections. In my Sydney homeopathic clinic it is very common for me to see a patient who states that they have just been prescribed antibiotics. The reason they have come to see me however, is that they are either still suffering from the original ailment despite the prescription, or they are still unwell as the original viral infection appears to have morphed into something else. I think that in general, conventional doctors know that antibiotics do not necessarily improve health or the outcome of acute infections, but they are under pressure from their patients to prescribe something. Unfortunately we live in a quick fix culture. It is the general observation of holistic medicine practitioners that after a course of antibiotics the general level of health in an individual is reduced. Patients often describe the following symptoms: lowered vitality emotionally feeling ‘down’ increased susceptibility to minor infections Upset digestion If you have read my sister article “Antibiotics – Friend or Foe?” you will have some understanding of the systemic effects that antibiotics have and the potential imbalance that they can create in our immune system. When the immune system is compromised, the whole health of the individual is compromised. So let’s take a brief look at 5 common ailments and the homeopathic alternatives.... read more

Antibiotics: Friend or Foe?

Are antibiotics miracle drugs or do they present us with more problems than they cure? Sam Adkins, The homeopathic Coach examines the evidence….. Key Facts: Antibiotics are present in ourwater and food chain in high amounts Antibiotics always cause side effects There is an increasing resistance to antibiotics in our environment from so called superbugs This sounds quite alarming doesn’t it? I think you are right to be alarmed but before we get totally negative about these drugs, we must remember that these drugs can save lives when life-threatening bacterial infections are present! So in this article let’s take a look at the main areas of concern; and for alternative and homeopathic options read my sister article: ‘Homeopathy Alternatives to Antibiotics‘. What do they do? Antibiotics inhibit or prevent the growth of bacteria, fungi or protozoa. They either kill bacteria directly or prevent the bacterium from dividing and therefore multiplying. When did they come into use? Although Louis Pasteur first identified the antibiotic properties of penicillin in 1877, it wasn’t until 1939 that antibiotics were commercially manufactured for use in World War ll. Effects on the gut Antibiotics are unable to identify good and bad bacteria. Our gut has many many species of bacteria that play roles in our health that can be described as useful to essential. The ideal gut flora is a delicate balance of different micro-organisms that have functions such as supporting the immune system or manufacturing neuro-transmitters for the brain. As soon as antibiotics are taken, many useful bacteria are wiped out and have to be replaced. It seems the gut cannot always do this... read more

Hayfever and Homeopathy Part 2

Welcome back to the second part of my article on Hayfever and how to treat it with Homeopathy. In Part One I explained why hayfever occurs and what steps you can take to help yourself if you are a sufferer. InPart Two I will be showing you which homeopathic medicines you can use to treat the acute symptoms of hayfever and how to prescribethem. So what are the main symptoms of hayfever? Itchy eyes, nose, palate, throat Nose running or stuffed up Sneezing Watery eyes Congestion in the head Feeling of being run down How can Homeopathy help? Homeopaths treat hayfever sufferers mainly in two ways: They can prescribe a medicine to deal with the acute symptoms Or they can treat the individual in a constitutional way before the hayfever season starts to prevent the hayfever response. In addition they can give a special homeopathic medicine prepared from the pollen that causes the allergic rhinitis response, and effectively de-sensitize the individual. This is called Isopathy. If you are are usually a hayfever sufferer, I recommend you pay your local homeopath a visit before the onset of the hayfever season or before your symptoms make your life miserable. Yor homeopath should be able to treat you constitutionally (if you have gone early enough), or with isopathy. Hayfever and Homeopathy Part 1

Hayfever is an inflammatory condition in allergic response to pollen. It affects the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, throat, palate and sinuses. Symptoms may include: itching of the eyes, nose, palate and throat and either a blocked or runny nose accompanied sometimes by watery eyes. Wheezing or breathlessness can also be experienced. If you have ever suffered from Hayfever you also know that it can make you feel wiped out and miserable! ūüôĀ Hayfever is seasonal and occurs in Spring (mostly tree pollens) and Summer (mostly grass pollens). Pollen can be blown by wind over long distances and strangely it is not uncommon for sufferers to be worse in large cities. This is because the inflammatory response can be made worse by dust, animals and other atmospheric pollutants (such as exhaust fumes). It is often more correctly referred to as Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis. So Why do the Symptoms of Hayfever occur? Often there is an inherited predisposition to suffer from allergic rhinitis and stress can certainly make it worse. It is essentially an overreaction of the body natural defense mechanism. The inflammation of the mucous membranes is caused by two main things (here is the technical part): The plant pollen is recognized by the body as a foreign particle and so the immune systems responds like it would to an invading virus and produces antibodies. The protein immunoglobulin (or IgE) and the pollen come into contact with the surface of special cells called Mast cells. These are then triggered to burst and release histamine and other chemicals into the surrounding tissues, producing the inflammatory response. Can you avoid pollen?... read more

Chocolate Addiction and Homeopathy

Chocolate is made from the seeds of the tropical Cacao tree, Theoboma Cacao. The Aztecs used the bean as currency, and European explorers brought it back to the western world in the early 16th century. But why do we love it and why do we crave it? Chocolate today contains a large proportion of fat and sugar which may go some way to explaining chocolate cravings, especially if you have an inherited ‘sweet tooth’. But there is more to it than that. In fact, chocolate contains over 300 different chemicals and not a lot is known about the effect that each of these may have alone or in combination. Here are 3 facts about Chocolate that might surprise you: When scientists measured brain activity in people eating chocolate they found that there was increased blood flow to the areas of the brain that are also activated when cocaine is taken! Chocolate contains the same ‘happy chemicals’ found in some recreational drugs such as ecstasy! It contains a neurotransmitter that affects the brain in the same way as the active ingredient in Cannabis So we can start to see why chocolate is more than just fat and sugar. If you have a child with behavioral issues you might like to consider that chocolate could be a powerful and harmful food for them. But why does Chocolate seem to make us feel good? It is known that eating chocolate stimulates the release of endorphins which are the natural hormones that make you feel good. It also melts at body temperature giving that delicious textural experience in the mouth! It also contains... read more

Toothache and Homeopathy

Your smile says a lot about you, but it’s hard to smile when you have toothache. My friend Craig Wilson from the¬†Sydney Holistic Dental Centre¬†has been working in holistic dentistry for years and knows how important it is to have healthy teeth and gums. As a leading holistic dentist, Craig says ” Your oral health relates directly to your general health. Many of the conditions we treat involve inflammation, both chronic and acute, and these have significant impacts on such general disease states such as heart disease, strokes and diabetes.” Just like in Homeopathy, parts of you always relate to the health of the whole! “Long term inflammatory conditions predispose someone to a range of negative health issues” says Craig. So what can you do when you have toothache and are in need of a dental procedure? This is where homeopathy can help out. It is a highly effective treatment for inflammation and pain so it is often used post operatively. When we have dental procedures such as a tooth extraction or a root canal treatment, Homeopathy really comes into its own. Read on to find out what my recommendations are for homeopathic relief from dental problems and procedures. Homeopathy for Insect Bites and Stings

Homeopathic treatment for insect bites is very effective. If you give the appropriate homeopathic medicine as soon as possible, relief from the pain and swelling will be rapid. When an insect sting has occurred, first gently remove any stings left behind with tweezers. Then bathe the area with Calendula tincture diluted in water, and apply a cold compress to ease the pain. Calendula tincture is a homeopathic medicine that promotes healing for any wounds and abrasions. However it is not recommended for deep wounds because it can be so effective that it may cause the surface of the wound to heal before the deeper layers. The following methods can be used as well as homeopathy,to neutralize the sting venom: If it is a wasp sting, bathe the area with diluted vinegar or lemon juice With a bee sting bathe the area in a solution of bicarbonate of soda. So which homeopathic medicines do you use? There are two main ones to consider. Take careful note of the symptoms in front of you and give the medicine that is the best fit with the symptoms: Ledum: Use Ledum after any insect bite or sting, and it can also be given after an animal bite to help prevent sepsis. Especially good for mosquito bites. The sting is better for cold applications such as a cool compress or cold water, and the wound may feel cold to the touch. The pains may be pricking and stinging and there may be redness and inflammation. Dosage: Give Ledum 30,three times a day until symptoms subside Apis: This medicine is used if there is considerable... read more

Do you get nervous symptoms?

Homeopathy looks at symptoms in a completely different way to conventional medicine. When the body is invaded by a pathogen such as a bacteria or virus, our immune system starts a very clever multi layered response process. Firstly, it tries to protect us from the invading pathogen; and then once that defense has been breached, it mobilizes numerous defenses to eliminate the invader. Some invasions are minimal causing a mild skirmish such as a minor head cold; whereas others are full blown battles producing strong and uncomfortable symptomology. So what are symptoms and why are they there? Imagine that your immune system is your own internal army or battle force that will use clever tactics to maintain your health. If you eat some bad fish and get food ‘poisoning’, you have inadvertently introduced a bacteria or virusinto your system that is potentially harmful. The first thing the body will do is try and eliminate the invader from the body by causing you to vomit. Once this is underway the body may add diarrhea to its arsenal of weapons just to ensure that everything is expelled. Uncomfortable symptoms for you yes, but very clever all the same. So that’s a homeopathic perspective on purely physical symptoms, how about a physical symptom that is secondary to an emotional or mental one? Imagine you have a large and very important exam ahead of you, or you have to give a presentation on which your future career depends. This would make most of us feel the emotional symptom of anxiety. But many of us too would find ourselves wanting to visit the bathroom... read more
